How do you engage parents during routine well visits?

By Abril Padrón, LPC · Updated September 2026

Engage parents during well visits by giving them something concrete to take home, asking one specific behavior question, and normalizing that behavior concerns are common. Parents engage most when they leave with a clear next step, not just reassurance.

Parents often sit on behavior concerns because they don't want to be 'that parent.' A simple opener changes the conversation.

Ask one specific question: 'How are tantrums going at home?' instead of 'Any concerns?'

Normalize the concern. Let them know it's common and treatable.

Hand them something concrete: a one-page strategy handout they can use that week.

Schedule the follow-up so the support continues rather than ending at the visit.
